Stewarding
Freshers' Fair could not take place without the dozens of Stewards who ensure the event runs safely and smoothly.
We are currently recruiting an enthusiastic and committed team to staff the event and welcome the 1000 visitors who will travel through the Fair every hour.
This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in your student union, boost your CV and meet new friends whilst sampling everything the Fair has to offer.
We are looking for 6 Senior Stewards, who would be paid, and up to 150 volunteer stewards, who would not be paid but who would get a great goody bag and some free stuff.
If you are interested please take a look at the information below and contact stewards@ousu.org.
Volunteer Stewarding - what's involved?
- When would I need to be available?
- There are six shifts available, one in the morning and one in the afternoon for each day that the Fair is running, from Wednesday 5th - Friday 7th October. You can work up to 2 shifts. If you are interested you will need to be in Oxford on Tuesday 4th October for a Stewards' briefing. Attendance at this is compulsory and you will not be able to take the shift you have been allocated if you are unable to attend to the briefing.
- Who can work as a steward at the Fair?
- Any returning student at Oxford University can apply to work as a steward at the Freshers' Fair.
- Are there any perks?
- Yes! For working a volunteer shift you will receive the following benefits:
- Free steward's t-shirt
- Free entry to the Fair
- A useful CV booster
- Vouchers from Heroes Cafe
- What are the shift times?
- Morning shifts run from 9:00am to 2:00pm and afternoon shifts from 1:00pm to 6:00pm.
- What does the job involve?
Your main responsibility will be to ensure the health and safety of those attending the event and the safe evacuation of attendees in the event of emergency. You will be responsible for ensuring that the flow of visitors through the Fair remains safe and orderly by directing visitors through the Exam Schools and answering their questions.
Additionally, stewards working with stalls will be responsible for ensuring that the Stallholder Regulations are being adhered to, and reporting any problems to the Senior Stewards.
- What information will I be given at the briefing?
As previously advised it will be necessary for you to attend a briefing on the afternoon of Tuesday 4th October; failure to do so will mean that you will not be able to work any shifts you have previously been allocated.
During the briefing you will be given information on the reporting structure, the health and safety evacuation procedures, together with your location during your shift and your duties in this position.
- Can I work part of a shift?
- No, unfortunately you'll need to work all of a shift that you sign up for.
- How do I apply?
- Send an email to stewards@ousu.org with your preferences for shifts by Monday 19th September, and we'll get back to you in mid-September to confirm when you'll be working.
- I have another question, whom should I contact?
- You can email stewards@ousu.org if you need any further information.
Senior Stewarding - what's involved?
